The U.S. and European space agencies have announced their plan to smash a spacecraft into the binary asteroid called Didymos. The joint European/U.S. and European Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment, or AIDA, is a mission created to intercept Didymos in 2022. Although Didymos does not pose a threat to Earth, space agency officials are hoping the technology will prepare them in the event a catastrophic asteroid does head toward the Earth in the future.
