Jackson Family Upset With James Durbin's "Pepsi" Comment

Michael Jackson's family has expressed outrage about a comment made by a contestant on American Idol.Read more after the jump....

On this week's episode, hopeful James Durbin made a joke about avoiding a "Pepsi Moment" on stage by staying away from a flaming set piece, a reference to the 1984 accident that saw Jackson seriously burned during the making of a Pepsi commercial.

In a statement released to TMZ, the Jackson family lashed out at Durbin.

"We were shocked to see this," the statement read. "It's nothing to make light of and everybody should be focusing on who was responsible for Michael's death," read the statement. Family patriarch Joseph Jackson also was reportedly miffed that "Idol" producers did not cut the comment from the West Coast feed of the show.

Durbin performed a version of Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)" that included flames shooting up from a piano. Asked by host Ryan Seacrest about the pyrotechnics, Drubin replied "I have a lot of hairspray in my hair to keep it from jumping around — so much so, the one thing I was worried about was having a 'Pepsi moment.'"

I think the Jacksons need to get off the poor kids back. Everyone knows he didn't blatenly want to offend them or the late king of pop. Go James Durbin! No need to explain yourself.
